Baby Jogger City Select has arrived

My new City Select stroller arrived last week and I love love love this buggy. I have a 3 year old and a 17 month old and I've gone through my fair share of buggies. Phil & Teds served us well for awhile but when we eventually outgrew it we moved to a side by side which was a complete disaster. Never mind the difficulty of maneovring around tight corners, try keeping two troublesome boys from killing each other when they are in such easy reach of each other. So 3 weeks ago, desparetly trying to find the exit in Ikea as my kids reminded me of something out of Malcolm in the middle I decided the buggy had to go.

I spent a few days researching double buggies on the internet and narrowed the selection down to two - the City Select and First Wheels City Elite. I went to a local store to check them out. The City Elite is a side by side buggy but you have the option of having both children facing you, facing away from you or, what grabbed my attention, one facing forward and the other facing rearwards. The seats are big enough for a 3 year old but the buggy is quite wide - shopping would not be easy! When I saw the size of the stroller folded though I nearly cried - I wasn't sure if it would fit in my car!

The city select is a tandem buggy. There are 16 different ways to configure the buggy. You can have both kids facing away or facing towards you, one can face you whilst the other faces out or both kids can face each other. The stroller can also be used with a carry cot for a new born. The seats are not quite as big as the Elite but still big enough for my 3 year old. I love that I can have my kids facing me - one of the biggest disadvantages that I found with Phil & Teds. Its easy to maneovre, easy to recline, simple to fold and light to lift. The shopping basket is a good size and useable (not just a foot rest). You can remove the extra seat and use it as a single buggy.

The disadvantages: 1) Its not the cheapest. 2) When using both seats mounting pavements can be a little tricky as you feel the weight on the front. All double buggies come with their compromises but this is fairly close to perfect.

Music for toddlers

Children respond to music from early infancy. It is important for their development as it allows them to creatively express themselves. Music can be fun and contributes to happy and relaxed atmosphere.

Below are some suggestions for songs that your child with enjoy.

The Jungle Book Soundtrack: This is a real classic with songs such as Bare Necessities. You'll love lisening to this cd with your child.

BabaSling - safe or not?

I have been using the BabaSling to carry my son who is now 13 months since he was a week old. I love this sling. It has given me so much freedom and its one of my favourite baby purchases ever. But lately there has been a lot of controversy over baby slings following the recall of Infantino SlingRiders due to safety concerns. I hope to use the BabaSling when I have another baby in the future so I was keen to find out how it is affected by the recall.

According to a response that BabaSlings has sent it's retailers, the problems that have been raised are to do with "baby-bag" style carriers: 'In a “bag-style” carrier the deep pouch, where the baby sits, puts the baby in a potentially suffocating curved position. Other design issues have been identified with this style of carrier, all of which do not affect theBabaSling™ in any way.' More information of safety issue with bag style carriers is available at http://babyslingsafety.blogspot.com/

The BabaSling provides support for carrying your child in positions that you would naturally carry them in without a sling. My advice is to carefully follow the instructions and when carrying a young baby, use one hand to help support their head. This feels like a much more natural way to use your sling in any case. Make sure your babies head is visible at all times.

The following are the main benefits that I have found from using the BabSling:
Freedom: it is so much easier to scoop your baby up in a sling then setup a pram. It also makes public transport, stairs, etc.. so much more accessible.
Security: babies feel most secure when they are in your arms and it easier to keep an eye on them. Even for longer journeys where a pram was necessary, I found myself bringing along the sling in case my son got upset.
Feeding: The BabaSling allows you to discreetly breastfeed your baby
Bonding and Social Skills: Buggies can be an isolating experience for a baby. A sling allows you to keep your baby close. This also promotes greater interaction with your baby when you are out. You can chat away pointing out interesting things as you go along.
